Jonathan Reynolds said he would need to know the “scale of the damage” and cannot base his comments on speculation, but he insisted any Labour spending plans would be fully costed. But Ms Kuenssberg pointed out that Labour’s current plans to find money to fill the black hole are “pennies”. She said: “What we can be pretty sure is people like the OBR, IFS, independent and respected number crunchers – there are all clear there’s going to be a significant black hole in the countries finances.
“Do you accept there’s going to have to be a squeeze on spending, potential spending cuts or tax rises?”
Mr Reynolds replied: “I can’t speculate on that. I need to know what the scale of the damage might be.”
Ms Kuenssberg interjected: “But that’s not speculation about a number here or there.
“Everybody who is independent who has looked at the state of the British economy right now has said there is going to be a hole and it’s going to have to be filled somehow.”

The Labour MP continued: “In the plans, we have put forward we are always clear, we wish to increase day-to-day revenue to pay for spending.
“We’ve said we would abolish the non-dom rule that will bring in another £3billion.
“We’ve said we would tax private equity differently, private schools wouldn’t be charities.”
The host added: “Those are pennies when you look at the scale of this suggestion.”

A third poster shows Ms Truss and the new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt dressed up as clowns, alongside the message: “Send off the clowns.”
The Prime Minister and Mr Kwarteng’s heads have also been photoshopped onto dummies in a fourth poster, which says: “These dummies have crashed the economy.”
