Question Time host Fiona Bruce grilled Labour’s shadow education minister on how the party would pay for its ambitious economic plans. The question earned huge applause among the audience in Manchester, signalling that questions remain over Labour despite its significant poll lead. In response, Labour MP Bridget Phillipson doubled down, insisting that “everything that we’ve set out has a plan behind it for how we pay for it”.
Ms Bruce said: “I haven’t heard Keir Starmer say how he’s going to pay for all of it exactly.
“I have heard what he intends, but I haven’t heard how much it will be and how he will pay for it.”
This comes after Sir Keir set out radical proposals at his party’s conference in Liverpool this week.
This included the biggest expansions of the NHS workforce in history and an £8bn publicly owned energy company, Great British Energy

Labour also announced plans to nationalise the railways.
Ms Phillipson replied: “We would not cut corporation tax, we would do away with non-dom tax status, we would not have the 45 rate cut either.”
The BBC host hit back: “That’s not going to pay for it.”
The shadow education minister responded: “I set out plans so that every child in England at primary school is able to have a breakfast club.
