Teenager shot outside high school as police hunt gunman

    A teenager has been shot in the stomach outside a school in America, according to early reports. The shooting occurred in Boston in the area of a school on Washington Street.

    Sources told NBC10 Boston that a firearm was recovered following the shooting.

    This will have been close to Jeremiah E Burke High School in the Dorchester neighbourhood.

    By 11.30am local time, there had been no arrests.

    Boston police closed off the area to investigate the incident.

    A spokesperson said in a statement: “Due to ongoing police activity, Washington Street between Columbia Road and Blue Hill Avenue will be closed.

    “Please seek an alternate route.”

    The shooting happened at around 9.30am local time (2.30pm BST), according to the Boston Globe.

    The paper reported that the teenager was taken to a hospital.

    She added that she saw a “getaway car” moving away from the scene.

    The witness said: “I looked out the window and I saw a getaway car speeding down the street…

    “Then I saw a… girl being carried out on a stretcher.”

    The school is reported to have been placed in “safe mode” during the investigation.

    This means that classes continued as normal within the school building while outdoor actives were temporarily suspended.

    The name of the victim has not yet been released.
