While his hit Marvel Studios movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was breaking box office records, Simu Liu was dazzling fans in San Francisco.
The 32-year-old actor threw out the ceremonial first pitch Sunday afternoon at Oracle Park before the San Francisco Giants took on the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The actor, who filmed several scenes for Shang-Chi in various neighborhoods of San Francisco, not only delivered a perfect strike… but also wowed fans with a backflip on the mound.

The video was posted on the Major League Baseball Twitter on Sunday afternoon, showing the actor delivering the pitch and showing his backflip, while making a bold claim as well.

Liu quote retweeted MLB’s tweet, adding, ‘That pitch was like 500% faster in my head GO GIANTS!,’ while tagging the official @shangchi Twitter.

While the bulk of the filming for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings took place in Australia, Liu and the rest of the cast and crew did film several scenes in San Francisco.
Filming took place in the Fisherman’s Wharf, Russian Hill, Noe Valley and Nob Hill neighborhoods of San Francisco in October 2020.
While Liu was throwing out the first pitch, en route to a Giants victory over the Dodgers, his film decimated the all-time Labor Day holiday weekend box office records.

Shang-Chi took in $71.4 million over the three-day weekend and an estimated $90 million over the four-day holiday weekend, both figures more than enough to destroy the previous record.
The record was previously held by director Rob Zombie’s 2007 Halloween remake, which earned $30.5 million over the four-day holiday frame.
The Marvel adventure opened in 4,300 theaters over the weekend, earning an impressive $20,930 per-screen average in its first weekend.

Surprisingly, the movie, which features a slew of Chinese stars such as Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung, does not have a release date planned in China quite yet.
Since most Marvel movies fare quite well in China, the second largest box office market in the world behind the United States, it may have an effect on Shang-Chi’s global haul if it fails to enter the Chinese marketplace.
