Shonda Rhimes recently discussed the eventual ending of the hit medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy during an interview with Variety.

During the sit-down, the 51-year-old producer spoke about various aspects of the long-running ABC show, which is currently in its 18th season.

The showrunner also devoted much of the discussion to the conclusion of the program, and she noted that she has revised the ending on several occasions.

‘I’ve written the end of that series, I want to say, a good eight times,’ she stated.

Rhimes went on to express that, although she had planned on finishing the show with a specific incident, all of her intended scenes had occurred over the previous seasons.

She noted: ‘I was like, “And that will be the end!” Or, “That’ll be the final thing that’s ever said or done!” And all of those things have already happened. So I give up on that, you know what I mean?’

However, the producer pointed out that it was ultimately her decision as to when Grey’s Anatomy would conclude.

‘Am I the person who decides when the show is over? Yes. And I take full responsibility for that when or if everybody gets mad at me,’ she said.

Rhimes noted that, with Krista Vernoff currently acting as the series’ showrunner, she was not sure how much input she would have in the finale.

She stated: ‘Am I going to be the person who decides like what the final scene is? I don’t know!’

The writer then noted that she had a set idea regarding the conclusion of Grey’s Anatomy, although she had to drop her plans upon stepping back as its showrunner.

‘If you’d asked me this question three years ago, or prior to Krista arriving, I would have said, “Yes, I can tell you exactly how it’s going to end.” But once you hand off the ball for real, it’s just different,’ she said.

Rhimes added: ‘Creatively, I’ve handed off all the reins entirely.’

The producer pointed out that she felt as if the decision to step back was positive and a natural step forward for the program.

‘If I had any creative involvement, then I would have notes. And if I had notes, people would have to take those notes. And if people had to take those notes, then suddenly it’s not their show anymore,’ she said.

The showrunner then noted that she was happy about the achievements of the series’ cast and crew, who had promoted diversity on popular programs.

‘It sounds arrogant to say it, but to me it makes me sad to have to say it. We changed the faces that you see on television. And it should not have taken so long for that to happen,’ she said.

Rhimes received numerous accolades for her work on the program, including three Primetime Emmy nominations.
