The statue was unveiled by Prince William and Prince Harry on Thursday. It is situated in Kensington Palace’s sunken garden, where Diana used to spend a great deal of time.

The work depicts Diana with her arms around two children, whilst a third follows behind.

However, it came under fire from BAFTA award-winning documentary Neil Crombie.

He tweeted: “I’m sorry but this is hideous.”

The message was ‘liked’ by the official BBC Radio 4 Twitter account.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, a BBC spokesperson insisted this was done by mistake.

They said: “This was an accident and shouldn’t have been liked. It’s now been deleted.”

Describing the statue, Mr Crombie added: “Simon le Bon turns transvestite in a bid to save developing world children from peril.”

Mr le Bon is a celebrated British musician, who co-founded Arcadia in 1985.

“We remember her love, strength and character.

“Qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better.”

The statue was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, a sculptor who previously produced the effigy of The Queen found on UK coins.

It appears to be based on Diana’s 1993 Christmas card, which featured a photo of her with William and Harry.

Eagle-eyed viewers noted the belt, skirt and open ribbed skirt Diana is wearing are the same as in the photograph.

Harry returned to the UK especially for the unveiling, having lived in California since stepping down from senior royal duties last year.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, he quarantined at Frogmore Cottage before attending the event.

The Duchess of Sussex remained in the US, looking after the couple’s son and newly born daughter.

At the ceremony Harry was seen greeting Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes; Princess Diana’s sisters.

The Prince also spoke at length with Earl Spence, his uncle.
