Ted is coming to the small screen after a prequel series based on the hit movie is ordered by NBC streaming platform Peacock from director Seth MacFarlane

Seth MacFarlane made his directorial debut with the 2012 comedy movie Ted, which became a major box office hit that grossed nearly $550million worldwide.

And now a live-action series based on the fan-favorite franchise is coming to NBCUniversal’s streaming platform Peacock.

‘Seth has a superpower of creating fandoms and Ted is a shining example of his ability to create beloved characters that we can’t get enough of,’ NBCUniversal Entertainment Content chairman Susan Rovner said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

She continued, ‘We are so lucky to bring this project to Peacock viewers who will have an opportunity to see their favorite foul-mouthed teddy bear once again.’

MacFarlane, 47, will write the script and executive produce the show. He is also in talks to reprise his voice role as the titular teddy bear.

However, Ted stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis are not expected to join the cast of the new series, which will be a ten-episode prequel to the original film.

According to sources who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, MacFarlane suggested the prequel concept when Rovner approached him about rebooting the franchise.

After the film premiered in 2012, Ted became the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy of all time that was not a sequel or based on existing intellectual property.

The story follows Wahlberg’s lead character John Bennett whose boyhood wish was granted when his teddy bear Ted came to life.

Thirty years later, Ted is still John’s closest friend and the pair’s constant partying, marijuana-smoking and shenanigans are threatening the stability of John’s relationship with his girlfriend, Lori (Kunis).

A sequel to the movie, Ted 2 debuted in 2015 and raked in over $215 million in global box office sales.

The Ted series will be the second show produced under the $200 million five-year overall deal that MacFarlane’s company Fuzzy Door has set with NBCUniversal.
