Scottish comedian hits out as SNP’s ‘small minded nationalism’ – ‘Blows my mind!'

Nicola Sturgeon is demanding a second referendum on taking Scotland out of the UK. Leo Kearse hit out at the notion Scottish nationalism is “progressive” and noted that, as a Scot living in England, the SNP wouldn’t let him vote in any referendum.

Speaking to Express.co.uk he said: “It blows my mind! How can nationalism be progressive?

“All across Europe we’ve got the rise of these small minded parochial xenophobic nationalism. You’re seeing it across Hungary, Poland. You saw it in England with the BNP.

“And now it’s happening in Scotland with the SNP but for some reason Scottish nationalism is seen as woke and progressive which it isn’t.

“It’s a horrible small minded ‘oh we are the best’, and hating on your neighbours, hating on the English.

“It’s a really toxic horrible self-defeating narrative the nationalist’s push.”

In a major blow to the nationalists, a Panelbase survey for the Sunday Times found most Scots want to remain part of Britain.

If a referendum were held 52 percent would back the union, with 48 percent voting for independence.

In 2014 Scotland voted to remain part of the UK by 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent.

“We’ve lived amongst you English, Welsh, Northern Irish people. We understand we’re all pretty much the same.

“Sturgeon doesn’t want the informed people who’ve left the country to be allowed to vote.”

The SNP fell one short of a majority at May’s Scottish parliament elections.

However Nicola Sturgeon is still hoping to get an independence bill through Holyrood with Green Party support.

Boris Johnson is urging the SNP to focus on Scotland’s coronavirus recovery rather than constitutional issues.

Mr Kearse argued the rise of the SNP has diminished Scottish influence within Britain.

The comedian stated: “Scotland used to have such a powerful voice in the UK, so many Prime Ministers and politicians.

“I worked in policing, I worked in government, in the creative arts – comedy, in London and there’s so many Scots all the way through government, all the way through the civil service.

“Running the UK with a much bigger voice than we should have proportionally.

“We’re losing that now because Sturgeon and the SNP are trying to pull people back within the borders.”

For their poll Panelbase surveyed 1,287 Scottish residents aged 16 and over.
