The gunman killed six people at a school in the Russian city of Izhevsk, according to a statement on Telegram from Russia’s Interior Ministry. The figure was later revised upwards to nine fatalities.

The Udmurtia branch of the Interior Ministry said the gunman had killed himself and 20 people were wounded. Russia’s investigative committee said in a statement the gunman killed nine people at the school on Monday (September 26) before taking his own life.

Russia’s investigative committee said the victims included five schoolchildren, two teachers and two security guards. The motive for the shooting in Izhevsk, which is about 600 miles east of Moscow, was unclear.

News agency RIA cited Governor Alexander Brechalov of the Udmurtia region, of which Izhevsk is the capital, as saying an unidentified man had entered the school and killed a security guard. He said there were dead and wounded among the school pupils.

Governor Brechalov, in a statement on the Telegram messenger app, also said he had arrived at the city’s School No. 88 and the security services as well as paramedics were at the scene.

In 2004, one thousand children and parents were taken hostage by Chechen separatists on the first day of the new school year.

After a three day siege, Russian forces stormed the school with some of the rebels blowing themselves up. A total of 333 hostages were killed in the chaos while hundreds were wounded. More than half of those who died were children.
