Sainsbury’s customers were left angry and annoyed yesterday after a payment problem meant that contactless and card machines were down. Shoppers took to social media to share their frustration after they were not notified of the problem upon entering the store.
It comes after retailers continue to urge shoppers to pay via contactless for shopping due to the pandemic.
Supermarkets are one of the most popular places to use contactless, with the continuing payment limit rising, now standing at £45.
In recent weeks, retailers have faced problems with card machines, including Tesco who’s glitch meant that shoppers were overcharged.
Taking to Twitter to share their experience in Sainsbury’s, shoppers expressed their frustration.

One shopper said: “I had a long day at work and needed to pick up some groceries on the way home.
“When I got to the checkout, I was told there had been a card payment problem all day but I wasn’t even notified about this problem when I came into store, super annoyed and a complete waste of time.”
Another explained: “Got my stuff, took it to the tills, scanned, bagged it in my bags, went to pay, contactless was down.
“Told I couldn’t have what I had packed up and since I had no other means, asked if I could please put the stuff back, walked out embarrassed.”

“Hi Sainsbury’s – seems contactless is down in all your stores. Might be an idea to let customers know on the way in, rather than wasting time queuing for ages because the self-service is closed, scanning everything and then finding out,” said another.
A fourth said: “Contactless not working in my local store. I had to abandon my shopping. A sign on the door warning customers would have saved me 30 minutes.”
It was thought that the problem had been resolved in the early evening but one shopper, who visited late last night, said that “contactless still down and didn’t have my physical card on me, so annoying”.
Last night a spokesperson said: “Contactless payments were briefly unavailable in our stores this afternoon. We’re back up and running and apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”
It comes after some Tesco shoppers were charged up to three times for their grocery shop due to a payment glitch.
The issue happened at the weekend, when contactless payment was declined despite shoppers still being charged.
One person said on Twitter: “@Tesco I was told contactless was down yesterday after I had already scanned my card. I was told it didn’t go through and I had to get cash out to pay in cash. But the payment did go through and I have now been charged twice. Please can you help?”
Tesco reassured customers that they would be issued with automatic refunds.
Supermarket Morrisons has also seen similar problems in recent months.
