Sadiq Khan said the new expanded Ultra Low Emissions Zone which launches from October 25 will bring “health benefits” to millions living in London. He said at least six in 10 households in the expanded zone do not own a car but still “suffer” as a result of pollution.
The changes will see private petrol and diesel cars charged £12.50 per day to use the roads on top of the Congestion Charge.
This is priced at £15 per day meaning the total fee will rise to £27.50 within weeks.
Speaking at Mayor’s Question Time, he said the impact on the city’s air quality would be “rapid”.
He said: “I’m excited to be expanding the ULEZ this month.
“It will bring significant health benefits of clean air to millions of Londoners both inside and outside the zone.

“But I know pollution is not just a Central London problem which is why I’m expanding the zone up to the North and South Circular roads.
“Six in 10 households in the expanded zone do not own a car yet suffer appealing air quality in part caused by polluting vehicles.”
Mr Khan added the new ULEZ in combination with tougher Low Emissions Zones for heavier vehicles would reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions from vehicles by 30 percent in 2021.
This will mean 92 percent of roads London-wide will meet legal limits for nitrogen dioxide in 2021.
“Including decarbonising the bus fleet and enabling more walking and cycling.”
He added: “They’ll be some who oppose us, we have got to take them on.
“We will take them on and take the public with us.”
Drivers can check if their vehicle is compatible with the new ULEZ rules online on the Transport for London website.
To check a vehicle, drivers only need their registration number and must state whether their car was registered in the UK or abroad.
