Vladimir Putin is paving the way for the detonation of a so-called ‘dirty bomb’ in Ukraine which he will then seek to blame on Volodomyr Zelensky, defence committee chairman Tobias Ellwood has warned. The terrifying prediction followed ominous remarks by Sergei Shoigu, Putin’s defence minister, who claimed Ukraine was itself planning to use a so-called ‘dirty bomb’ packed with radioactive material, warning of what he called an “uncontrolled escalation” in the war which has raged since Russia’s invasion.

Shoigu made his remarks during a telephone call with French Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu today.

A readout of the call cited Moscow’s apparent concern about Ukraine using such a device, without providing evidence to support such a suggestion.

The defence ministry said: “They discussed the situation in Ukraine which is rapidly deteriorating. It is trending towards further uncontrolled escalation.”

Mr Ellwood, the Tory MP for Bournemouth East, told Express.co.uk: “This is the pretext to RUSSIA using one and blaming Ukraine.

“This is a false flag being planted.”

There was no indication whatsoever that Ukraine had either the capacity or the intention to explode such a device within their own country, Mr Ellwood stressed.

He added: “And they wouldn’t – it would jeopardise international military and diplomatic support.”
