Ruby Rose encourages young queer people to proudly embrace their sexuality

Ruby Rose has shared an inspirational message to young queer people encouraging them to proudly embrace their sexuality, as she declared: ‘You only have one life.’

The Australian actress, 35, opened up about her own experiences in which she said she was ‘crucified’ at school after coming out as a lesbian at age 12, with the star sharing her passion about young people living life to their full potential.

Ruby’s poignant words comes in the during an interview with Glamour magazine as part of their special Beauty of Pride issue amid Pride month, with stars including Antoni Porowski, Madison Bailey, Kim Petras and Gottmik also featuring.

After revealing what Pride means to her, the Vanquish star then told of her own tough battle after coming out at a young age, in which she told she was ‘bullied’ and ‘crucified’ at school for being the only gay person. 

Heartbreakingly, she admitted that she might not have come out as young as she did if she’d ‘realised how homophobic’ people were once she was older, but told how important is was to be ‘honest’ and ‘open’ with her identity and live her own truth. 

With her own past experience in mind, Ruby went on to give advice to others going through what she did and she encouraged them to live their life in their own way.

She said: ‘I know it’s super cliche, but you only have one life and it’s a magnificent gift that’s been given to you. If you’re living it for anybody else or trying to minimise yourself to make others comfortable then you’re not living life to its potential, to what you can be. You deserve to love. You deserve people to love you for who you are. 

‘You just have to love other people and be loved. So just keep fighting, keep doing it, keep believing in yourself, and keep listening to that soul and what it wants and give it to yourself because you deserve it.’

Meanwhile, Queer Eye star Antoni Porowski, 37, discussed how having a platform has woken him up to the prejudice faced by the LGBTQIA+ community and his own privilege.

He said: ‘I have a responsibility not only to my heritage but also to my LGBTQIA+ community. I was very ignorant to a lot of what was going on prior to living a public life, mainly because I think I do come from a place of privilege in many aspects. 

He added that he had ‘assumed’ he was ‘straight’ for ‘most of his life’ and that people were unaware he was dating me ‘unless I really told them’. 

The TV personality went on to say that he ‘got away with’ much more than his castmates and that the ‘responsibility’ for the community really came about once he had a platform.

He added that being immersed in the LGBTQIA+ environment ‘lit the fire under my a**’.
