During her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, Meghan claimed the Royal Family “didn’t want” her son to be a prince. She said this was one of the reasons the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to quit their Firm as they wanted to put his safety first. The pair were shocked to learn Prince Charles is set to make legal changes to the Letters Patent when he becomes king, which would mean Archie would not become a prince.
This is likely to be part of his plans to slim down the monarchy.
The Sussexes are now refusing to use another, more junior title, the Earl of Dumbarton, insiders told the Mail, in a bid to keep pressure on the Prince of Wales.
Meghan told Oprah: “You know, the other piece of that convention is, there’s a convention – I forget if it was George V or George VI convention – that when you’re the grandchild of the monarch, so when Harry’s dad becomes King, automatically Archie and our next baby would become Prince or Princess, or whatever they were going to be… But also it’s not their right to take it away.”
A source added: ‘This is what nobody realised from the interview. The real thing was that Charles was going to take active steps to strip Archie of his ultimate birthright.’
The Letters Patent was created November 20, 1917, and contains the rules for royal titles.
King George V, the Queen’s grandfather, created the rules to allow the title of Prince and Princess to be given to the children of the sovereign, as well as the children of the sovereign’s sons and the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales.
But when Charles becomes king, the rules could change as he will have the power to change the Letters Patent.

8.06am update: Prince Harry agreed Oprah interview after royal ‘bust-up’ over losing titles
In March, the Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle confirmed to Queen Elizabeth II they did not want to return to their former roles as working royals.
As a result, Harry and Meghan have had to drop a number of their royal patronages because they do not serve the Royal Family in an official capacity anymore.
A source close to the royals told The Sun Harry agreed to the interview after an argument with his family about him losing his titles.
They said: “There was a bust-up just before Oprah but it wasn’t to do with Archie’s title.
“That had been known and discussed for quite a while.
“Harry and Meghan were very cross before Oprah because the final Megxit separation had just been signed off which included Harry not keeping military roles.
“That was what made him so angry. He’s very emotional and his military roles were very important to him given that he served.”
