In the 40th meeting between the pair, Roger Federer prevailed in four sets in a thrilling encounter.
It means the Swiss star is into his 12th Wimbledon final, where he will face Novak Djokovic on Sunday.
Federer turns 38 next month, while Rafael Nadal is also nearing the end of his glittering career.
But fans don’t want either of the duo to hang up their rackets just yet after the incredible clash.
One wrote on social media: “Tennis won’t ever be the same once Federer and Nadal retire and that is coming soon.. Enjoy till it last.. This here is a once in generation rivalry..”
Another added: “Federer is simply the GOAT. Nadal a class act too. Who are we going to watch play tennis when these two and Djokovic retire?”
While a third wrote: “Tennis will never be the same when Federer and Nadal retire. Both great(est) players with charisma and good manners.”
And another simply put: “Tennis will be awful when Federer and Nadal retire”
With a fellow tennis fan writing: “WOW! Just when you think Federer has it wrapped up, Nadal pulls off another class shot. Shame they have to both retire sooner rather than later.”
Federer himself acknowledged how much effort was needed to beat Nadal.
“I am exhausted. It was tough at the end,” he said.
“Rafa played some unbelievable shots to stay in the match.
“The match as played at a very high level and I enjoyed it. The battles with Rafa are always really special.
“I think I had spells where I was serving very well and the biggest points in the matches went my way.
“He plays with such a velocity and spins and you’re not always sure you’re going to connect.
“I think that first set was huge. Get the lead and try to protect it. I thought it was a joy to play today.”
