Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has reportedly sustained a lesion on his ‘femoral bicep’ which will see him be ruled out of all matches prior to the World Cup. However, the France international could be available for the World Cup.
Varane was inconsolable as he left the pitch at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, fearing that his newly-sustained leg injury would leave him sidelined for the World Cup. Given that the impact with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was not severe and that the player was reduced to tears instantly, many feared the worst.
But recent scan results have sparked positivity in the Red Devils camp. According to Julien Laurens, the former Real Madrid star could return in three to four weeks and is under the impression that his recent MRI results are ‘positive’.
Therefore, although it would be a risk, Varane will be available to represent Les Bleus in Qatar. Didier Deschamps has a plethora of talented central defenders to pick from, though the experience and quality of Varane cannot be understated.
Man Utd transfers: Plans for next three signings are damning on Solskjaer
Plenty of Varane’s team-mates attempted to reassure him as he left the pitch and was replaced by Victor Lindelof, though Jaap Stam ‘can’t understand’ why the 29-year-old was so upset. He told Optus Sport: “He was very emotional. The game played on when he fell down and he just kept lying on the pitch basically and after, when he stood up, he was emotional.
“It looked like he had a problem with his hamstring or whatever but we don’t know yet. I don’t know what to say about this, he probably thinks he’s out of the World Cup but I can’t understand being so emotional on the pitch to be honest. It’s not only from a centre half’s point of view, you try to imagine yourself in the situation and why is he so emotional and why he is acting like that. There are other things that are worse than this, is what I think.”

Ten Hag makes £40m transfer decision at Man Utd
Varane has been a key player for United so far this season and central in their progress that has seen them regain their status as contenders for the top four. Alongside summer signing Lisandro Martinez, the Red Devils defence has looked strong and capable of playing out from the back – just as Ten Hag desired.
Though the Dutch boss will be hoping that some of his fringe stars can step up in the absence of Varane. Lindelof has met the mark when called upon previously, though Harry Maguire – when he returns from injury – could see this as an opportunity to stake his claim as to why he deserves to remain in Gareth Southgate’s plans for the World Cup.
