Prince William angered some Scottish nationalists by meeting former prime minister Gordon Brown during his recent visit to Scotland. Phil Dampier, a royal biographer, defended the prince and urged the Queen to intervene personally.
He tweeted: “Why any fuss over Prince William meeting Gordon Brown.
“Royals and PMs and ex-PMs meet all the time.
“Charles was close to James Callaghan.
“Mayor death with William and Harry finances after Diana’s death.
“We all know the Queen believes in the Union.”
The SNP, and leader Nicola Sturgeon are demanding a second referendum on taking Scotland out of the UK.
In 2014 Scotland voted to remain part of Britain by 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent.
Mr Dampier continued: “The more I think about it the royals should speak out in favour of the Union.

Mr Dampier has written a number of books about the Royal Family including ‘Royally Suited: Harry and Meghan in their own words’.
In response to his Tweet journalist, Tessa Clarke asked: “Aren’t they supposed to be above politics?!”
Mr Dampier replied: “Yes, but don’t you think this is more than just politics?
“Families and culture throughout the UK are intertwined and have been for centuries.”
The Cambridges’ met with Mr Brown at the Queen’s official Edinburgh residence on Thursday.
A Kensington Palace spokesperson said: “During his time in Scotland Prince William has spoken to a broad range of people from different communities, including politicians from across the political spectrum.”
Prince William had already met Ms Sturgeon earlier on during the trip.
When in Scotland the Cambridges’ are known as the Earl and Countess of Strathearn.
Ahead of the 2014 referendum, the Queen issued a rare comment urging voters to “think very carefully about the future”.
The remark was interpreted as helpful by prominent pro-Union campaigners.
