Royal commentators described the decision to include Sarah Ferguson in the ceremony as “surprising,” as the Duchess of York was on “the fringes” of the family. Speaking to Channel 5 documentary ‘Fergie & Meghan: Inconvenient Royals,’ Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke said that there were “reports that Prince Phillip did not want Fergie at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding,” due to tensions between her and the Firm after a string of scandals following her divorce from Prince Andrew.

The Duke of Edinburgh and Fergie were involved in one of the Firm’s most bitter feuds, despite her allegedly being his favourite daughter-in-law in the early years of her marriage to Prince Andrew.

Although the Duke and Duchess of York have been divorced for over two decades, they have always remained close, and have since lived together or near each other.

Throughout the tumultuous moments, Fergie still maintained relationships with certain members of the family, and when Meghan Markle joined, it was reported that she looked to Fergie for advice and comfort.

Ms Montague claims that when Prince Philip demanded that Fergie was not to receive an invite to the big day: “Harry intervened and said, ‘this is what I want.’

“‘This is what my bride wants as well. She has bonded with Fergie and she wants her there.’

In 2011, Prince William made the decision not to invite Fergie to his wedding to Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge.

Following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, the Duchess of York has commented that she was “honoured” and “grateful” to be invited to the wedding.

She added that on the day, she kept thinking of Diana in her heart.

However, it was also rumoured that the Duke of Edinburgh thought that their plans were “naive.”

Fergie was not among the 30 mourners at Prince Philip’s funeral, instead she looked after her grandson August, in the Royal Lodge.

Although Fergie’s relationship with Philip fell into disrepair, there is one royal that she has reportedly kept on her side.

The Duchess of York has previously opened up about her relationship with the Queen, saying she was “more of a mother” to her than her own mother was.

Just last month Fergie was spotted heading to the Queen’s Balmoral Estate in the Scottish Highlands, hinting that she may have found her way back as part of the royal fold.

Fergie has recently referred to Her Majesty as “her greatest mentor.”

Despite their divorce in 1996, the Duke and Duchess of York maintained a friendly and close relationship, co-parenting their daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

During the first lockdown in the UK, the pair lived on the grounds on Windsor and spent time with their youngest daughter and her husband, Jack Brooksbank.
