PMQs LIVE: Truss breaks cover to fight for political life as Tory rebels close in on PM

Ms Truss will face Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer at midday today in a make-or-break session of Prime Minister’s Questions. The embattled Prime Minister will be expected to defend her record after a string of financial U-turns from her Chancellor. In a sign that support from party members is hemorrhaging, a poll suggested 55 percent wanted her to resign, while only 38 percent wanted her to remain. The showdown comes amid fears she could “betray” pensioners by ditching her pledge to protect triple-lock payouts. State pensioners are in line for a 10 percent hike from next April under the formula which was suspended during the Covid crisis by former Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

But Downing Street yesterday admitted the pledge to bring back the lock is under threat as Chancellor Jeremy Hunt reviews Government spending. Tory rebels are now closing in on the Prime Minister, with plots from Team Rishi and Team Mordaunt circulating on how to replace their leader with their desired candidate.

Meanwhile, Crispin Blunt, Andrew Bridgen, Jamie Wallis, Angela Richardson, Charles Walker and Steve Double have publically called for her resignation.
