Piers Morgan has responded to rumours he will replace his nemesis David Walliams as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 55, was a part of the show’s original judging line-up alongside Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden when it started in 2007.

Piers said on Friday he would love to reunite with ‘the old band’ while making a thinly-veiled dig at the show suffering its lowest-ever viewing figures for the 2020 final.

The finale of the ITV show was watched by an overnight average of just 5.8 million. This is down from 8 million the previous year.

Of the rumours, Piers said: ‘I had a wonderful time on BGT, when ratings were 20 million viewers. And it would be fun getting back with the old band.’

It came after The Sun, bosses are hoping Piers could shake things up on the show amid declining viewing figures for the most recent series.

The insider said: ‘Britain’s Got Talent is one of the few Saturday night shows which continues to shine and stay relevant.

‘But all shows need refreshing, and Piers will certainly do that. He has been approached by two senior execs and, for his part, has said he would do it if the terms are right.

‘He will give the show back its edge and provide those brilliant water cooler moments. He will revitalise the series.’

A BGT spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Unsurprisingly, during these times, it won’t come as a shock to the public to hear that no such discussions have taken place regarding BGT 2022.’

David, 49, has already signed a one-year extension to his contract, keeping him on the talent show through 2021.

However, Piers’ Good Morning Britain contract is said to expire next year, meaning he would be free to film for the 2022 series.

Earlier this year, ITV approached Piers to fill in on the judging panel for Simon Cowell when he had to take time off after breaking his back in a cycle accident.

However, Piers reportedly turned the offer down because he did not want to work with David, calling him an ‘insufferable twerp’.

A source said: 'All shows need refreshing, and Piers will certainly do that. He has been approached by two senior execs and, for his part, has said he would do it if the terms are right'

Meanwhile, David was also not pleased with the idea and was said to have threatened to quit if he was forced to share a panel with Piers.

The pair’s long-running feud, which started when David took over as judge on BGT, was reignited earlier this year when Piers said he wouldn’t attend the National Television Awards because the ex Little Britain star was hosting.

Speaking to The Mirror, he said: ‘There’s no point when the same people win the same awards ever year.

‘I’d rather stay at home and watch Groundhog Day and the host David Walliams makes my skin crawl.’

Piers previously appeared on Chris Evan’s breakfast show and said he didn’t know ‘what the hell would happen’ when his GMB contract ends.
