Penny Mordaunt slams Downing Street 'soap opera' as Tory rebels call for Truss resignation

Penny Mordaunt has said the country needs “stability not a soap opera” in an article written in support of Liz Truss. As the PM faces growing calls from her own MPs to resign, her former leadership rival says the party needs to work with Ms Truss and likened her to Winston Churchill and his political struggles.

Ms Mordaunt is seen as a likely frontrunner for the top job should Liz Truss be ousted.

Writing in The Telegraph, she said: “Our country needs stability, not a soap opera.

“The national mission though is clear, as the Prime Minister said. That is what we should all focus on now.

“It needs pragmatism and teamwork. It needs us to work with the Prime Minister and her new Chancellor. It needs all of us.”

Sunday saw the first on-record demand of a resignation from the PM as her controversial economic policies saw her sack Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng.

He has now been replaced by Jeremy Hunt.

Tory MPs Crispin Blunt, Andrew Bridgen and Jamie Wallis have all openly called for Ms Truss to leave her post.

In her piece Ms Mordaunt drew attention to Winston Churchill’s “low ebb” when he was first elected to office, reminding the public the “hard work would pay off”.

Another Tory loyal to Ms Truss said of a possible coup: “Those plotting against the Government should remember that markets respond to political instability.

“The plotters will not get a coronation. Those wanting to run a rerun of the summer contest will simply bring about an early general election.”
