Djokovic said: “I played the best match of the clay court season so far for me against arguably the best tennis player in the world on this surface.
“He had an amazing tournament in Barcelona, he beat Roger here yesterday in a thrilling match so he was in form.
“[It] was very tough conditions, very fast, ball bouncing very high. Thiem next to Rafa probably plays with the most spin on the tennis tour right now.
“It’s very difficult to stay close to the line and try to dictate the play but I just managed to play the best when it was most needed.”
Commentator Robbie Koenig praised Djokovic’s determination and reckoned the Serbian’s roaring celebration on match point will have sent a message to his possible final opponents Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
“The very best find a way and he found his way today,” Koenig told Amazon Prime.
“He has found his way on the dirt too.
“I think the reaction was a strong message to the other two semi-finalists – ‘I am ready to go’.
“He did well to get it done in straight sets.
“But two hours and 22 minutes for two sets of tennis, it showed it was a hard-hat day for him.”
