Amid the unveiling of the extension to the Tube network, the mayor for Greater Manchester questioned Mr Johnson’s levelling up plans. As Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station were unveiled, Mr Burnham said: “While the North waits patiently for any sign of levelling up.” In agreement, arch Remainer and Labour peer, Lord Andrew Adonis supported the creation of a high-speed rail line to Manchester.
Lord Adonis said: “HS2 to Manchester – needed ASAP!”
In opposition, however, some took to Twitter to question Mr Bunrham’s claims.
Andrew Spooner said: “I don’t think a new tube station opening up suddenly means everyone who lives in that corner of London is ‘levelled up’.
“Lots of terrible poverty all over London as you well know having spent so many years down here.”
John Ruddy said: “First new tube line in London for over 20 years.
“In that time Manchester Metrolink has had 5 extensions and new lines.”
This is a developing story, more to follow…
