A UK mum who posts her money saving hacks online has detailed how to make savings by changing a setting on your boiler. Beth, the “Budgeting Mum” lives in the Midlands with her two children.

She helps inspire other parents to live well on their budget, sharing these tips and tricks with her followers. The mum has a huge 43.1K followers on her TikTok account @budgetingmum where she has amassed 349.6K “likes” on her videos.

After learning a clever tip to save money on her energy bills from a boiler technician, she posted it to her TikTok. Beth said: “I just had on boiler service done and while the engineers were here I asked him what we can do to make this combi boiler more economical and save some money on the gas.

“He said the one thing that you can do is the radiator setting. So, here it’s on an economic setting, but he said you can turn this down.

“So this is currently on about 65 to 66C degrees. But he said it can happily run at 55C. If you turn it down to 55C this will save you a little bit of money on your gas.”

The radiator flow temperature dictates the temperature of the water flowing through your radiators.

Making this change can save you around nine percent on your gas bills, according to The Heating Hub.

Under the EPG the average annual gas and electricity bill for a direct debit customer with “typical” levels of gas consumption in 2022 will be £2,500. Nine percent of that sum equates to a huge £225 Britons could be saving.

One of Beth’s followers explained why doing this saves you money, and said: “Think of it like driving a car, going slower takes longer but doesn’t use as much fuel to cover the same distance. The same logic applies here.”

Others also offered their advice to save on energy bills. One suggested: “Turn off any radiators you don’t use.”

Another said: “Turn down the thermostat on radiators and thermostat for temperature control of the house. My radiators are at 3/4 thermostat for the house is at 18.”

“The best thing to do is switch off the pre-heat,” another wrote. “Your boiler won’t keep heating up the water when you’re not using it.”

One suggested simply forgoing the heating, and said: “Save more money by not turning it on! No need at all for heating in the UK yet this year!”

Another said: “I don’t know one person who’s putting the heating on this winter.”

Another tip to save money on your laundry was posted by the mum too. The method can reduce energy usage by 62 percent with one setting.

She changed the temperature of her washing machine to save cash.

She said: “Always was at 20C and use a stain remover before you wash at a lower temperature. This can reduce energy usage by up to 62 percent.”

According to a study by Proctor & Gamble testing Ariel Gel, the only stain that a 20C wash could not get rid of was olive oil. So it’s likely that clothes that are not very dirty will be cleaned thoroughly on this wash.
