Mother transforms son's bedroom into the ultimate superhero-themed space for less than £400

A DIY-savvy mother has revealed how she converted her son’s bedroom into a gaming paradise – all for around £400.

Erin Teasdale, 24, from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, transformed her son’s drab bedroom into an incredible black and yellow superhero themed sanctuary for her three-year-old son Travis.

Working on a budget, Erin upcycled second-hand furniture from the Facebook Marketplace, printed her own wall art and found affordable accessories at shops such as IKEA and B&M.

Speaking about transforming her son’s bedroom, Erin told LatestDeals.co.uk:  ‘In all honesty, we couldn’t afford to buy everything new. It’s our first house we’ve ever bought and everything else needed doing too but Travis’ bedroom was always going to be first and I’m so glad we did it first as it gave us the motivation to get the rest of the house done!’

Erin revealed: ‘This is our first official home. It’s our first house we’ve bought.

‘Since my partner and I got together six years ago we’ve never settled properly so I wanted to make our house a home and Travis’ room was always going to be first.’

Meanwhile she added: ‘Travis needed a proper big boy’s bed so we thought it was the perfect opportunity to transform his bedroom.

Erin said she stated designing the room based on her son’s favourite colour, yellow.

Erin said that the project, which she estimates cost around £400, helped her and three-year-old Travis bond during during lockdown

‘He’s very into superheroes and things at the moment,’ she said. ‘But I also wanted it to be a more ‘grown-up’ colour scheme so that he can grow with it and just change the yellow as and when.’

She described how everything in the new bedroom was purchased online, with duvet sets, cushions and lights all coming from Amazon.

Meanwhile Erin printed out the artwork used on the walls herself and ordered the rest from marketplaces such as Etsy and Amazon.

In total, the cost-savvy mother-of-one said the bedroom makeover cost her less than £400.

She revealed: ‘The rugs were £30 off Amazon, the bookshelves under the bed were from IKEA for £3 each and all the photo frames were from B&M costing between £3 for a pack of three small ones to £6 each for the A3 ones.

‘The bed was second-hand off Facebook Marketplace for £100 and the drawers are second-hand too for £25. The RRP was £180 and £50 if I had bought them new.

‘I upcycled the bed myself using Brooklyn interior paint from B&Q.’

Meanwhile she also utilized items she already owned, including an old cot mattress and shelving, to create the perfect space.

Both Erin and Travis said they are delighted with how the room turned out and revealed the decorating project helped them to bond during lockdown.

She also said that she got the idea to upcycle some of the furniture from Facebook and said that the process was therapeutic.

She said: ‘I also got a lot of ideas for his den underneath off Pinterest but it was very inspired by his love for reading. I hated the fact I could never snuggle up to read a story and now we can every night.

‘I’m a huge fan of everything from the stylish yellow and black theme to the amazing personalised wooden signs.

‘If you want to renovate your home on a budget, make like Erin and source second-hand bargains on social media – upcycling isn’t just great for your wallet, but is also good for the environment, and, as Erin says, it can be a great bonding experience too!’
