Spotify released on Tuesday the seventh episode of Archetypes, the podcast series led by Meghan. In this episode, titled Upending the ‘Angry Black Woman’ Myth with Issa Rae & Ziwe, the Duchess discussed the portrayal of black women in pop culture and society.
While speaking with actress and producer Issa Rae, Meghan recalled her acting days.
After praising her podcast guest for portraying “nuanced, layered and multifaceted” women, Meghan recalled: “I remember when I was auditioning, the idea of even black roles, and I remember those casting sheets, where the description of the character she always had to have an edge or an attitude.”
Meghan launched her podcast series in late August with the aim to analyse and discuss labels that try to hold women back.
Among the high-profile guests she has had so far in her show were tennis star Serena Williams, who discussed the word ambition, actress Mindy Kaling, who analysed the stigma surrounding single women, and songwriter Mariah Carey, who looked into the word diva.
Last week, the Duchess of Sussex’s podcast series featured Paris Hilton, who opened up on how the bimbo label affected her life and career in the early 2000s.
The episode sparked a lively discussion after Meghan opened it by sharing her experience on Deal or No Deal, a game show which aired on US’ NBC channel between 2005 and 2009.
Meghan, who was a briefcase model during 34 episodes of the show aired between 2006 and 2007, said she ended up quitting it because, while she was thankful for the steady paycheque she was receiving, she did not like how the show was making her feel and the fact it put more focus on her look than her brain.
Her remarks prompted the response of some of her fellow ex-briefcase models, who argued they were never treated as bimbo during their time on the game show.
