The royal commentator also suggested that the decision by the Queen and Prince Charles to deny them their own media team proved to be the “final straw”. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex shocked royal observers when they announced in March 2018 they would be creating their own household. The announcement served as the first indication that all was not well between the the Cambridges and Sussexes behind the scenes.

The royal couple said they would need separate staff from the ones they had been sharing with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

As part of the changes, Meghan and Harry wanted to create their new press office to deal with their media relations.

However, they were prevented from doing so by the Queen and Prince Charles, who insisted that their affairs would be handled by Buckingham Palace.

Royal expert Camilla Tominey told ITV documentary ‘Harry and William: What Went Wrong?’: “Harry and Meghan want their own office like the Cambridges have, their own office to run out of Windsor, out of Frogmore Cottage where they were living at the time.

“Rather than have their own press office established, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were told that they would be incorporated into Buckingham Palace.”

Ms Tominey continued: “It’s at that point that the Queen and Prince Charles sweep in and say ‘no, we will manage your affairs’.

The split between the two households became further entrenched a couple of months later in June.

It was then that Meghan and Harry revealed they would be leaving the Royal Foundation that the two brothers had originally set up.

As an alternative, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said they would create their own charity, Sussex Royal.
