Masked man sparks panic as latex-clad prowler spotted in Somerset town

    Avon and Somerset Police said the incident happened in the village of Claverham, Somerset, on September 1. Since November 2018, there have been over 14 reports of a person dressed in disguises approaching people at night in the village.

    The latest incident with the “masked man” took place at 12:15am.

    Avon and Somerset Police were called to a house in Claverham but were “unable to locate the man”.

    The last reported incident with a leather-clad stranger was in July 2019, where a woman said a man in a “g*** suit” charged at her In the village.

    Officers said they were keeping an open mind as to whether the two incidents were linked.

    An unnamed woman has complained about the latest incident, sharing her children were scared by the masked man.

    She told the BBC: “I’ve got older children and even my kids are saying ‘it’s the g*** man again’.

    “They’re really freaked out by it.

    “But it could be anyone and I want to come from a practical point of view and do something to help people feel safer.”

    She added people had reported “weird things happening” recently in the village, and said: “I’m not too bothered to walk around on my own but it freaks my children out and I want them to feel safer.”

    Abi, 25, was involved in the July 2019 incident and said when she heard about the latest sighting she felt “anxiety and anger again”.

    She added: “My heart felt like I was running a marathon, [there was] an instant feeling of panic, anxiety and anger again which took me over a year of private counselling and medications to control.

    “If I’m not worrying at home, I’m worrying at work because my wife’s at home and so are many other women.”

    Describing her attack she said the man was fully covered in the suit and was “coming towards me and was touching his groin, grunting and breathing heavy”.

    Two men, 28 and 34, were arrested on suspicion of indecency offences in July 2019.

    No further action was taken against the men due to insufficient evidence.

    An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said at the time: “Thankfully, we’ve not received any more reports of similar incidents since the most recent report of a man wearing a black body suit approaching a woman on 11 July.”

    Police have also increased patrols in the Claverham area since September 1 following the latest report and have appealed for information.

    Anyone with information or with dashcam or doorbell camera footage of a man in Claverham on September 1 wearing what was described as a “full face mask” has been asked to contact officers.
