Married At First Sight star David Pugh fought off machete gang using his martial arts skills

Married at First Sight star David Pugh single-handedly fought off a gang of five machete-wielding robbers using his martial arts skills after they broke into his home.

The thugs burst into the 56-year-old’s home, demanding cash and attacking Pugh’s teenage son and a 20-week-old puppy.

The reality star was left covered in blood after courageously fighting off the masked men – who were armed with baseball bats and golf clubs as well as machetes – with his bare hands.

The crooks left Pugh’s detached West Midlands home in Catherine-de-Barnes, Solihull, empty handed after a ten-minute struggle.

The aftermath of the violent ordeal from 2018 was captured in graphic photographs showing a topless Pugh covered in blood from a broken nose and facial injuries he sustained during the frightening attack.

He revealed that the incident inspired him to present his new wife Shareen with a survival kit after he married a stranger for the Channel 4 show in an episode that aired this week.

The gift, which contained a CPR face shield and a pen that can smash glass prompted a flurry of comments on social media.

Pugh said his wife was ‘fortunate never to have experienced anything like that night’.

‘It was one of the reasons I gave her the survival kit. I think it worked as she now has alarms and cameras set up and is now a bit more aware.

‘She is blessed in that she’s never had any real disasters or calamities in her life. But that’s not true for me.

‘Experiences have taught me to always be prepared for the worst and what happened with the machete raid certainly changed my outlook on life.

‘I know giving someone a survival kit could come across as little bit crazy and extreme but I’ve always described myself as a prepper after what happened in 2018.

‘It just gives you a bit of an awareness and you have to be adaptable in certain situations. It made me more self-aware and I think I helped Shareen to do the same.’

It’s not the first time Pugh, who is trained in Israeli self-defence combat Krav Maga, has discussed the incident.

Speaking previously, he said ‘instinct took over’ when he found gang attacking his 17-year-old son and Rottweiler puppy Zeus.

Pugh awoke to find the men in balaclava’s standing at the top of the stairs after they broke into his £400,000 property in 2018.

He said he threw bottles of after-shave and chairs at the men while trying to rescue his son.

‘There was a loud bang at 3am when they smashed the patio doors to get in but I thought Zeus had knocked something over,’ the dad-of-two said.

‘By the time I got out of bed, totally naked, I was approaching the door and it was kicked in.

‘It went with a right smash and there was four or five guys on the landing in balaclavas.

‘The men kept shouting ‘where’s the money, give us your money’

‘I grabbed the first couple I could, it turned into a brawl and a battle. I just grabbed what I could and hit them with aftershave bottles and chairs.

‘I was getting hit repeatedly on the head – they had machetes, a baseball bat and a golf club.

‘I was desperately trying to get to my son’s room. but I had so many splits to my head, I was drenched in blood.

‘We could only assume they saw that, realised we hadn’t got any money and thought, ‘we have gone too far’, and got out of here.

‘They must have thought they half-killed me. In retrospect we were probably quite lucky.

‘We have a puppy and he got a blow to the head, he ended up running into the garden, he fell into the canal- he was hypothermic.

‘A guy called Andy, a canoeist, found him and took him to Birmingham Dogs Home and warmed him up.

‘We got out of hospital and took him to the vets and stitched him up.

‘He’s traumatised, my lad it traumatised, the police said it was one of the most brutal attacks in a home they had ever seen.

‘They didn’t leave with anything which is the only silver lining.

‘They kicked every door in, all the frames are gone, every cupboard they have gone through, and rummaged through everything they could quickly.

‘We are like most people, we have a telly and most bits and bobs and what’s in your wallet – but that was about it.

‘I took quite a few blows to the head and my son got a cut to his head as well, he tried to fight them off.

‘He got hit by the bat about three times and he can hardly walk, his knee is all swollen up and we thought his arm was broken but it is badly bruised.

‘The aftermath from it is horrendous.

‘I don’t think I’ll have a sleep-filled night for a long time, I’ll be on tenterhooks all the time.

‘You don’t expect something like this in your home.’
