Mark Webber shares theory on hostile Toto Wolff antics as Red Bull investigation continues

Former Red Bull star Mark Webber claims that the recently reignited feud between Toto Wolff and Christian Horner could be due to lingering tensions from last year’s controversial world title battle. The Mercedes boss fired shots at his Red Bull counterpart in Singapore over suspicions that they had exceeded last season’s spending cap.

Last year, F1 teams were permitted to spend no more than £114million as the FIA introduced the cost cap measure in an attempt to level the playing field. Exceeding the limit can be met with a range of punishments and some reports estimated that Red Bull had overshot the cut-off by £10m. 

Wolff claimed that notions of a team breaching regulations were an ‘open secret in the paddock’, despite Horner’s claims that Red Bull’s finances were above board. “It’s funny Christian says that because it’s been weeks and months they’re being investigated, so maybe he doesn’t speak to his CFO,” added the Mercedes team principal. 

Webber, who won nine Grands Prix during an accomplished F1 career, believes that the new hostility could be the rekindling of tensions from last year’s gripping title battle which saw Max Verstappen prevail in a stunning finale.
