Manchester United wanted to sign Eriksen from Tottenham this summer, enquiring about the Denmark international just days before the transfer deadline.

However, the Red Devils were unable to sign him, choosing to walk away from a deal.

And the Manchester Evening News claim that United believed Real Madrid were lobbying Tottenham into entertaining a bid for Eriksen.

That’s due to the fact Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane has spent the summer chasing Paul Pogba.

Real thought that had United landed Eriksen, it would have paved a path to them snapping up Pogba.

But that didn’t happen, with the Red Devils choosing to stick with the France international.

Pogba remains keen on a move to the Bernabeu but United will not entertain offers for him.

And that has left Zidane angry.

So angry, in fact, it has been claimed the Real Madrid manager may even walk away from the club.

Spanish journalist Diego Torres, who works for El Pais, recently said: “Not signing Pogba puts Zidane on the brink of resigning,” Torres, who works for El Pais.

“Zidane personally promised Pogba he would bring him to Madrid, and now he is left looking bad.

“This has only increased the lack of confidence between Zidane and Florentino.

“For Zidane, his project and Pogba are almost the same thing. Nothing that he was promised has really come to pass.

“Zidane returned as a protective shield for Florentino, but he has already fulfilled that political and social mission.”

Eriksen, meanwhile, still wants to leave Tottenham.

And he could yet secure a move away with the transfer window for European clubs still open.

Real remain the Denmark international’s first choice – but Atletico Madrid are in the running as well.
