Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag has second Harry Maguire concern as worrying footage emerges

Maguire was given a huge vote of confidence by England boss Gareth Southgate over the international break. Despite being dropped at club level, the former Middlesbrough manager backed the centre-back to continue and he started against both Italy and Germany.

The latter tie won’t have done his confidence any favours, however, with two mistakes leading to German goals. Firstly, he gave the ball away in the lead-up to Kai Havertz’s curling strike from distance after an earlier incident saw him bring Jamal Musiala down in the box for Ilkay Gundogan’s penalty.

They weren’t the only things for Ten Hag to be concerned about, either, as post-match footage shows Maguire limping out of Wembley with what’s believed to be a hamstring issue.

The Red Devils disastrously lost their first two games of the season with Maguire at the back against Brighton and Brentford. Since dropping out, they’ve won four league matches on the spin, including surprise results against Liverpool and Arsenal to leave them fifth in the Premier League table.

That doesn’t bode well for Maguire’s chances of barging his way back into Ten Hag’s plans, with many England supporters also calling for Fikayo Tomori to take his place at international level. Southgate’s faith remains unwavering in the former Leicester City defender, but admitted that mistakes are what cost them after seeing victory slip through England’s fingers against Germany.

“I know everyone will focus on Harry but there were some very important moments that Harry delivered in the two matches,” he said. “In these moments we have to back our best and most experienced players unless it’s untenable.

“I think as a group they’ve really come together this week, they’ve grown. This week we’ve learned a huge amount. A couple of errors have cost us the goals but they played with terrific spirit and a belief that we haven’t shown in the last few games.”
