Delays have built up anticlockwise due to the incident with around four miles of queues heading back towards junction 28 for the A12.
There is a diversion via the Hollow Square symbol, taking the M11, North Circular and the A10 through Walthamstow and Enfield, to re-join at J25.
This will be in place until the road can re-open.
A witness shared a picture of flames erupting from the lorry.
They added firefighters were on the scene.
They wrote on Twitter: “The #M25 motorway is currently closed both ways close to J26 Waltham Abbey due to a lorry on fire.
“Firefighters are on the scene.”
