Highways England reported that a serious traffic collision took place between Junction 12 and 11a.
Indeed, lanes three and four will now be closed due to the incident.
Such is the accident, travellers should be prepared for delays up to one hour.
Delays are also expected between Junction 13 and 11a southbound on the M1 this morning.
They said in a tweet this morning: “M1, Southbound between J12 & J11a, lane 3 & 4 closures currently in place due to a serious Road Traffic Collision.
“Emergency Services at scene dealing. Delays Expected.
“This incident is causing long delays of 45-60 minutes on the M1 southbound between J13 and J11a.”
Please allow plenty of extra time for your journey and consider alternate routes if possible or delaying your journey until the incident and congestion has cleared.
In pictures, large numbers of commuters can be seen gridlocked due to the incident.
The delays concern those heading towards Bedford and Flitwick.
