Linda Nolan marks late sister Bernie's 60th birthday… amid her and Anne's own cancer battles

Linda Nolan has celebrated what would have been her late sister Bernie’s 60th birthday was an emotional tribute.

The second youngest Nolan sister Bernie died in July 2013, aged 52, after her cancer spread to her brain, lungs, liver and bones.

Marking the day, Linda, 61, who is currently battling liver cancer herself, shared a snap with her sibling and wrote that her ‘heart aches just to hug you one more time’.

Taking to Twitter, the singer penned: ‘Happy 60th Birthday Bernie… What a party it would have been, my little sister joining the 60s club!

‘Not a day goes by when I don’t think of you and miss you. My heart aches just to hug you one more time and to hear your voice. Until we meet again, I love you so much.’

Linda also encouraged her social media followers to raise a glass to Bernie on her 60th, prompting actress Kym Marsh to pour herself a beverage.

The singer wrote: ‘All ready to celebrate Bernie’s 60th. Don’t forget to have a drink (specifically a Moscow Mule) and tweet us your pictures’

Youngest sister Coleen also marked the emotional day, sharing a snap of Bernie in a red dress along with a broken heart emoji.

The Nolan sisters – Anne, Denise, Maureen, Linda, Bernadette and Coleen – formed part of Irish pop group The Nolans.

Bernie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. She underwent chemotherapy and a mastectomy and announced in February 2012 that she was cancer-free.

However, months later Bernie shared the heartbreaking news that her cancer had spread to her brain, lungs, liver and bones. She died in July 2013, aged 52.

Since her tragic death, Linda and the other sisters have often spoken about how much they miss their younger sibling.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain after revealing her own cancer diagnosis in September, Linda said: ‘We miss Bernie every single day. I don’t think we’ll ever get over it. The first time I looked in the mirror when I had my head shaved, I saw Bernie looking back at me.’

And speaking of their loss on Lorraine in October, Linda said: ‘I once remember Bernie saying – we miss her every minute of every day – I do remember someone saying to Bernie, ‘Your poor family’. She said, ‘I’ve never said why me. Why not me?’

‘Three sisters having breast cancer, we’ve had the gene test, we don’t have the BRCA1 or 2, there will be a rogue gene somewhere that we’ve got, they haven’t found it yet.’

Linda added: ‘Bernie was a warrior. You’d say, ‘Do you want some water?’ and she’d say, ‘No, I want some vodka and ginger ale.’

Linda said: ‘People say to us, ‘Why do you talk about it so much?’ [It’s] our way of giving back to people… maybe if we can say something on TV or in a magazine that makes them go, ‘Oh, that’s normal, it’s ok to feel like that.’

Siblings Linda and Anne began chemotherapy at Blackpool’s Victoria Hospital in July.

They received news of their shock diagnoses within days of each other, shortly after the sisters returned from filming a series of The Nolans Go Cruising in March.

After the sisters received their heartbreaking diagnoses, Maureen moved in with Anne and Linda relocated to her sister Denise’s home.

Linda and Anne Nolan recently discussed their cancer battles during an appearance on Lorraine.

The sisters, aged 61 and 69 respectively, divulged details of their chemotherapy during their fight against breast and liver cancer.

While admitting the coronavirus pandemic has made their fight even harder, Linda, who has finished her chemo, also lamented not being able to see family.

The star was devastated after older sister Anne, 69, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer earlier this year, with Linda, 61, finding out she has incurable liver cancer just few days later.

Anne’s diagnosis came 20 years after she was first diagnosed with the disease in 2000.

While pop star Linda has also battled cancer before. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, cellulitis and lymphoedema in her arm in 2007 and secondary cancer on her pelvis in 2017.

Speaking about treatment during the pandemic, Anne said: ‘I suffered really badly with anxiety, I think it’s because of the Covid thing as well…

‘Going through it in a pandemic when you can’t have family around…[last time] I was able to go out, have a good time. But you just have to take every day as it comes and be positive about the treatment that you’re having…

‘Even though it’s harsh and makes you ill, it’s to make you better. That’s the way to think about it. Whatever you’re going through is to make you better and to cure your cancer. My prognosis is very good at the moment…

‘I had an operation about two weeks ago, the results were fabulous. They found no cancer in any of the tissue that they took from the breast and from my lymph nodes, and that was absolutely amazing…

‘And that was because of the chemotherapy. The results were fantastic.’

Speaking of her health Linda said: ‘I’m doing great thank you. Thank god for make-up this time of morning. I’ve had my chemo, it’s gone according to plan. I’m just waiting for the results of scans that I’ve had to see if the chemo has worked.’

Of getting checked, Linda said: ‘Please don’t wait. Don’t be frightened. The longer you wait your treatment might be worse. Make an appointment and get in there. I have never not felt safe [in hospital during the pandemic].’
