More than 13 years after its Broadway debut, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first musical, In the Heights makes its debut on the big screen.
Miranda, 41, hit the red carpet at the In the Heights world premiere during the opening night of the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
The writer and performer was joined by his wife Vanessa Nadal, who he’s been married to since 2010 and shares two children with.

Miranda stepped out for the event at the United Palace Theater in New York City wearing a crisp light-blue button-down shirt.
He also stepped out with navy blue slacks and white sneakers as he hit the red carpet with his wife.
Nadal stepped out with a stunning full-length white patterned dress, gold earrings and black flats for the premiere.

Miranda wrote In the Heights in 1999 while he was a sophomore at Weslyan University, where it first played as a one-act show.
He ultimately expanded it into a full musical version, which was first debuted at the National Musical Theater Conference in Waterford, Connecticut in 2005, a year after Quiara Alegria Hudes came aboard to co-write the book with Miranda.
The show debuted off-Broadway in 2007 before arriving on Broadway in 2008, where it was a smash hit, nominated for 13 Tony Awards, winning four, including Best Musical.

The story follows Usnavi de la Vega (Anthony Ramos), a beloved bodega owner in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City, Miranda’s own hometown.
The story takes place over the course of three days following the intersecting lives of several characters in this Dominican neighborhood.
Ramos is joined by Melissa Barrera, Stephanie Beatriz, Jimmy Smits, Corey Hawkins, Dascha Polanco, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Marc Anthony and Leslie Grace.

The film will debut simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max June 11, as part of Warner Bros.’ historic deal putting all of their 2021 films in theaters and on the streaming service simultaneously.
Miranda will next voice the title character in the animated film Vivo, and he’s making his feature directing debut with tick, tick…Boom!, based on the book by Rent creator Jonathan Larson.
