Lewis Hamilton has appeared to defend Max Verstappen amid the Dutchman’s decision to boycott Sky Sports F1. The Mercedes star agreed that social media was a “toxic” place after the Red Bull star was asked to explain his reasons behind his Sky Sports snub.

The entire Red Bull team have refused to speak to the broadcaster for an “indefinite” period of time. It comes after Ted Kravitz suggested Hamilton was “robbed” of an eighth F1 crown during his ‘Ted’s Notebook’ show after the United States Grand Prix.

When asked to justify his decision to boycott the channel, Verstappen said: “At the moment, social media is a very toxic place. And if you are constantly being like that, live on TV, you make it only worse instead of trying to make it better in the world.

“You keep being… You keep disrespecting me, and one point I’m not tolerating it anymore, so that’s why I decided to stop answering.”

Verstappen’s Sky Sports boycott also covers the network’s international channels in Germany and Italy. Horner was a notable absentee during the post-race coverage last night despite Red Bull’s victory.

Verstappen was shown speaking on the channel twice after the race but this was not sourced by Sky’s on-site talent. One clip was taken from F1’s main feed while the other was conducted by F1.com.

In Austin, Kravitz commented: “[Hamilton] gets robbed, comes back, his next year’s car is rubbish… doesn’t win a race all year, and then finally comes back at a track where he could win the first race all year, battling the same guy who won the race he was robbed in the previous year, and manages to finish ahead of him.

“What a script and a story that would have been. But that’s not the way the script turned out, was it?”
