Max Verstappen could receive a more extreme penalty than Lewis Hamilton did last year as Red Bull are accused of allegedly breaching budget cap rules. German newspaper Auto Motor und Sport claims the team spent £9million ($10m) more than their budget cap allowance for last season.

Red Bull have denied any wrongdoing, stressing the reports are “just speculation”. When asked if cost cap breaches should be more severe than other sporting penalties, Sky Sport host Anthony Davidson said: “They should be very serious.

“At least as serious as say a wing infringement for example.” Hamilton was forced to start the 2021 Brazilian Grand Prix at the back of the field after the FIA found his rear wing didn’t meet the regulations.

It could have derailed the Mercedes star’s championship bid but Hamilton fought back to win the race anyway. However, many feel Red Bull’s penalty would need to be heavier if the team are found guilty of spending more than they were allowed.

Davidson’s comments come just hours after Sauber boss Frederic Vasseur also stressed that action should be taken. He also referenced Hamilton’s penalty last season as an example of what minor infringements can lead to.

Vasseur commented: “I was disqualified for 0.9mm two years ago – Mercedes, something like 1mm in Sao Paulo last year. You have to put everything in perspective. We had two years now to discuss with the FIA to ask for clarification. I think we had a clarification on the financial regulations almost every week.

“It means that teams are asking questions to the FIA and they are replying to everybody and if we have a grey zone, I think it was also our job to ask for clarifications.” Ferrari have already claimed they would be looking for a large punishment due to the performance benefits of overspending.

However, Red Bull boss Christian Horner has hit back at the team’s rivals, claiming any remarks were “bang out of order”.
