Leicester fire: Residents told stay inside as crew tackle huge blaze at former nightclub

    Fire crews are tackling a large blazeat a former nightclub in Leicester. Firefighters were called to the blaze at the building in Gravel Street at about 5.15am BST. Leicestershire Police urged people to avoid the area and the fire service told residents living nearby and premises to keep their windows closed. 

    The police posted on social media: “Large fire reported | 05:31 | Area of Burleys Way, St Margaret’s Way and Church Gate will be closed, please avoid the area. Updates to follow.”

    Leicestershire Fire Control tweeted: “Due to an ongoing Fire incident we are dealing with in the Vaughan Way area of the City Centre, members of the public are advised to avoid the area and local residents to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke #StaySafe.” 

    Burleys Way, St Margaret’s Way and Church Gate have all been closed, while Haymarket bus station has been shut down for safety reasons.

    St George’s roundabout, city bound from St Matthew’s Way, has also now been closed off.
