Kirsten Dunst says there was an ‘extreme’ pay difference when she starred opposite Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man
Kirsten Dunst revealed there was an ‘extreme’ pay disparity between her and her Spider-Man co-star Tobey Maguire.
The Bring It On actress, 39, discussed the inequity in a new interview with The Independent, telling the publication: ‘The pay disparity between me and Spider-Man was very extreme.’
‘I didn’t even think about it. I was just like, “Oh yeah, Tobey [Maguire] is playing Spider-Man.”‘

It’s reported Maguire earned $4million for his part, later negotiating a $17.5million salary for the 2004 sequel Spider-Man 2, per the Cheat Sheet.
The first of the Sam Raimi-directed Marvel features would rake in $821million upon its 2002 release while the sequel earned $789m.
Dunst pointed out how she was central to the sequel’s marketing strategy, telling The Independent: ‘But you know who was on the cover of the second Spider-Man poster? Spider-Man and ME,’ she told The Independent.
But Dunst didn’t rule out a return to the role of Mary Jane ‘MJ’ Watson, telling Variety: ‘I would do it. Why not? That would be fun.’
‘I would never say no to something like that,’ she said, joking: ‘I’d be old MJ at this point with little Spidey babies.’

After it was pointed out that Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe were reprising their roles in the upcoming movie, Dunst said, ‘No, I’m the only one [not back]. “Can’t put an old girl in there!”‘
