Khabib fight '50 per cent more likely' for Georges St-Pierre if Russian is 'stellar' against Gaethje

UFC legend Georges St-Pierre ‘is 50 per cent more likely’ to come out of retirement for mega-fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov if champion delivers ‘amazing performance’ against Justin Gaethje, reveals Canadian’s coach

  • Khabib Nurgamomedov faces Justin Gaethje on October 24 at UFC 254
  • Retired MMA legend Georges St-Pierre will be watching the fight with interest
  • The Canadian retired in 2019 but a legacy bout with Khabib could tempt a return
  • GSP’s coach Firas Zahabi believes Khabib must beat Gaethje in style to do so

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s legacy would be bulletproof with a victory over Georges St-Pierre, but the Russian must tempt the UFC icon out of retirement first.

According to GSP’s head coach, Firas Zahabi, the lightweight title holder has a chance to do just that on October 24 when he meets Justin Gaethje in the octagon.

The Canadian retired in February 2019 as one of the greats but a shot at a legacy fight against the dominant champion could be too good to turn down for the 39-year-old.

Georges St-Pierre’s trainer has admitted the Canadian could be temped out of retirement

‘Georges vs. Khabib, I think, is the only fight Georges will come back for, to be honest with you,’ Zahabi told Sherdog.

‘I think it’s the only one, if Khabib – we’re all expecting him to win his next fight – does it in decisive fashion, I think it will greatly increase the odds that he fights Georges in the future.

‘If he loses, there would be no possibility in Georges’ mind. But if he has a great performance – which I think he will – I think that ups the chances greatly. Let’s just say that.

‘If he has a stellar performance, I think it will be a 50 percent chance that it entices Georges to come back for one more fight.’

Gaethje was the man who stepped in to replace Nurmagomedov and produce a shock victory over Tony Ferguson at UFC 249, dominating the American behind-closed-doors in May.

The Russian is firm favourite for the October 24 clash but it has been more than a year since the 29-year-old last fought, enduring an emotional 12-months.

Khabib’s father and trainer died after contracting Covid-19 in July and it’s unclear whether the champion’s dominance will be affected in the ring.
