Jussie Smollett’s ‘phone records rejected by police for being heavily redacted’ in investigation into Empire star’s brutal racist attack

THE PHONE records that Empire star Jussie Smollett submitted to Chicago police following his brutal attack last month have been rejected for being “heavily redacted”.

TMZ report that the PDF file the 35-year-old star submitted could have been “manipulated” – claiming that numbers may have been added or deleted – although police told the publication that there is no evidence that the file had been altered.

Jussie was attacked in Chicago last month

Jussie previously revealed that he was on the phone to his manager Brandon Moore at the time of his attack, with Brandon telling authorities that he heard racial and homophobic slurs being made.

Chicago Police Department asked for a copy of Jussie’s phone bill to authenticate that the call occurred, receiving the PDF yesterday.

A rep for the actor told TMZ: “Jussie is the victim here, which has been slated by the Superintendent of Police.

“Jussie has voluntarily provided his phone records from within an hour of the attack and given multiple statements to police.

“Chicago PD has repeatedly informed us that they find Jussie’s account of what happened that night consistent and credible.

“Superintendent Johnson has been clear from day one that Jussie is a victim.

“We are continuing to work closely with the Chicago PD and remain confident that they will find Jussie’s attackers and bring them to justice.”

Police are yet to find any CCTV footage of Jussie’s attack, which is being treated as a hate crime.

Jussie previously said that he was attacked shortly after arriving in Chicago from New York for filming.

The actor, who plays Jamal Lyon in drama series Empire, was walking back from Subway in the early hours of the morning when two unknown assailants are said to have yelled both homophobic and racial slurs at him before beating him up while shouting: “This is a MAGA [Make America Great Again] country.”

At one point, a rope was tied around Jussie’s neck and an unknown substance – reported to be bleach – was poured onto his skin.

Jussie was previously forced to hit back at conspiracy theories surrounding the attack, with residents from the same Chicago neighbourhood casting doubt over his report.

One neighbour, Agin Muhammad, previously told the New York Post: “I don’t believe it happened the way he said it did.

“I’ve been in this neighbourhood five years. I don’t believe it, not around here… Half the people are gay and the other half are black.”

Another local, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s a lie, because Chicago is the most liberal city around.

“They have cameras everywhere… Why can’t they find the attack?”

In response, Jussie said in a statement: “I am working with authorities and have been 100 percent factual and consistent on every level.

“Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served.”
