The US President and the Prime Minister appeared to share a joke as they warmly greeted each other at Carbis Bay in Cornwall.

First Lady Dr Jill Biden and the newlywed Carrie Johnson joined the pair as they prepared for crunch talks ahead of the G7 summit this weekend.

Earlier today it was claimed the US had issued a formal complaint to Britain over its handling of the Northern Ireland Protocol since leaving the EU, accusing ministers of risking undermining the Good Friday Agreement.

The rebuke, known as a demarche, sparked outrage among Conservative MPs, with Tories claiming the US President was going “senile”.

It significantly darkened the mood ahead of the first meeting between Mr Johnson and Mr Biden.

But amid the backlash, the US has sought to scale back its remarks.

A senior US administration official said the President was not looking to be confrontational or adversarial in talks with Mr Johnson.

“He didn’t come here to give a lecture,” the official said.

“He came here to communicate what he believes very, very deeply about peace in Northern Ireland.”
