The Leader of the House joined Welsh Secretary Simon Hart in the picturesque Carneddau mountain range in North Snowdonia in the first of a series of visits around the UK to promote how Parliament and the UK Government are helping its nations and regions. The trip included a visit to Zip World set up by former Marine Sean Taylor where Mr Rees-Mogg hurtled down the zip wire to the tune of the Dambusters carrying a Union Jack and Welsh flag before landing to the sound of Rule Britannia. He also met hill farmer Gareth Wyn Jones, who taught the Commons leader to herd sheep in Welsh.

There was also a visit to a prison where one of the inmates shouted out: “Jacob for Prime Minister!”

Mr Rees-Mogg also got a taste for Wales when he tried out the whisky at the Pinciplaity’s oldest distillery Aber Falls.

A Cabinet Office source said: “He absolutely charmed everybody. The message we got back was how pleased they were the Leader of the House visited.

“He was able to talk to them about their issues, the impact of trade deals and also how Parliament and the UK Government can help them.”

“Having braced myself for the zipwire by playing the Dambusters theme, I was rather grateful to Zipworld for ensuring my tweed suit survived the 100mph journey.

“Some flag-waving to finish is surely de rigeur.”

He added: “The zipwire is just like getting legislation through Parliament – we start with high ambition and whizz along through the clouds, but with careful preparation we travel smoothly and finish with aplomb.”
