Health Secretary Matt Hancock was approached by reporters who asked if he had watched much of former chief aide Dominic Cummings giving evidence at a joint committee today. Mr Hancock said he did not watch much of his “performance” but was instead working on the vaccination programme. The minister then sheepishly said he was “saving lives” and would release a full statement in the House of Commons tomorrow.
Mr Hancock told reporters near his home that he was “dealing with getting the vaccination rollout going, especially to over-30s, and saving lives.”
He explained he was too busy to watch the “performance” which saw Mr Cummings attack the health secretary repeatedly.
Mr Cummings claimed there were discussions early on in the pandemic about whether to sack Mr Hancock.
He also branded his 100,000 daily test target “stupid” and could name “15 to 20” reasons to remove the minister from office.
No10 was asked several times to comment on the allegations to which they simply stated Mr Hancock and Prime Minister Boris Johnson worked “closely together”.
Mr Cummings appeared before a joint parliament committee and gave evidence for seven hours about the Government’s handling of the pandemic.
He added he pushed for Mr Hancock to be sacked as there would be more death if he did not.
