Hungarian Grand Prix LIVE: Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen resume fierce rivalry

Lewis Hamilton will start the Hungarian Grand Prix on pole position after qualifying four-tenths ahead of Max Verstappen. Valtteri Bottas will join his Mercedes team-mate on the front row, with Verstappen behind in third.

Red Bull felt they should have had a faster qualification lap but Hamilton slowed Verstappen down while coming out of the pits in Q3 with just two minutes remaining.

The seven-time world champion’s action meant that Sergio Perez, who was in the trailing pack, was unable to complete another out lap so he starts sixth.

Hamilton has come under fire for his “gamesmanship” but Red Bull team principal Christian Horner played down the actions.

“It’s a bit of gamesmanship,” Christian Horner told Sky F1. “Lewis had got a hell of a lap in the bank and then obviously he’s just backing things up and obviously doesn’t want to give our cars a clean run.

“But it’s his right to do that, he’s got the track position so we haven’t got a major issue. It’s all about tomorrow now.”

1pm: Good afternoon and welcome to Express Sport’s live coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix where Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen will resume their fierce battle for the Drivers’ Championship.

Hamilton crashed into Verstappen last time out at Silverstone and anticipation will be high if the pair go wheel-to-wheel again in Budapest.

Mercedes star Hamilton cut his deficit in the standings to eight points by winning his home Grand Prix a fortnight ago.

But can he do it all over again to leapfrog Verstappen before F1’s summer break? Stay tuned for all the latest from the Hungaroring.
