In a damning evidence session to MPs, the Prime Minister’s former chief adviser, Dominic Cummings, accused the Health Secretary of misleading Mr Johnson on the policy for people moving from hospital to care homes.
Mr Cummings said it was “complete nonsense” to claim care homes would be shielded as people with Covid-19 were sent from hospital to care homes without being tested.
“Hancock told us in the Cabinet Room that people were going to be tested before they went back to care homes,” Mr Cummings said.
“We only subsequently found out that that hadn’t happened.
“Now all the government rhetoric was we put a shield around care homes and blah blah it’s complete nonsense.
“Quite the opposite of putting a shield around the, we sent people with Covid back to the care homes.”
Thousands of people died in care homes at the start of the pandemic after cases were imported from hospitals.
Mr Cummings said the Prime Minister considered firing Mr Hancock for the failures but changed his mind.
Downing Street refused to deny the allegations when asked this afternoon saying it would not comment on the claims made by the former No10 employee.
Then asked if Mr Johnson had full confidence in Hancock, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “Yes.”
“The Health Secretary has been working closely with the Prime Minister throughout and they’ve been fully focused on protecting the health and care system and saving lives.”
