Liz Truss has been urged to offer her resignation as Prime Minister after holding the title for a little over a month. Andrew Marr offered a scathing assessment of the political atmosphere as he warned the Prime Minister should “go today with dignity” rather than try and cling to power and face an internal revolt from within her own party. The news comes after the Conservative mini-budget sparked market turmoil and Liz Truss sacked Kwasi Kwarteng as Chancellor before announcing the second drastic economic policy u-turn of her short premiership.

Speaking on LBC, Andrew Marr said: “If she doesn’t go today, they will get her out next week or the week after.

“The choice is to go today with dignity, in her own words and on her own terms, or be pulled out in a much more humiliating fashion later.”

After Kwasi Kwarteng abandoned scheduled talks in Washington to rush back to the UK, the news broke that the Chancellor had been asked to “stand aside” from his leading Cabinet role.

In wake of the startling decision, Number Ten confirmed Jeremy Hunt would replace Mr Kwarteng as the new Chancellor of the Exchequer.

In his analysis of the Cabinet reshuffle, Andrew Marr said: “Jeremy Hunt is very much on the opposite wing of the Conservative Party to her.

“He would not share any of her core economic views about growth and unfunded tax cuts or anything like that.

“It is the most radical message she could send to the markets about ‘I’ve changed my mind, I’ve got it wrong, I’m u-turning on the whole thing’.”

Emphasising the differences between the former Chancellor and newly-appointed Jeremy Hunt, he said: “He is the anti-Kwasi Chancellor.”

Marr suggested the decision to announce Jeremy Hunt as the new Chancellor could be a deliberate tactic by the Prime Minister to unite the notably divided Conservative Party.

He reported: “I think she’s toast, but, if she’s not toast, I think what she is doing is listening to the plotters who are moving against her at the moment.

“Their idea was to assemble a kind of shadow Tory cabinet, reaching out to all parts of the party and then go in and tell her it’s over and replace her with an emergency Conservative Cabinet which looks at all directions within the party.

“In that, you would very likely have seen Jeremy Hunt there, so perhaps she is trying to preempt it by doing it herself.”
