'Go to the source of the problem': How to get rid of fruit flies for good and 'fast'

A TikTok user, Kate Bacon, uses her account (@kbacon) to share science facts with her 1.4M followers. She recently shared a “fly problem life hack” which amassed 1.2M views.

In it, the content creator shared some insight for homeowners struggling with tiny-winged invaders. Kate said: “If you’re having a fruit fly problem that just doesn’t seem to go away those might not be fruit flies.”

The science enthusiast went on: “Sure, setting out traps like jars with vinegar and dish soap can be helpful, but those are only really eliminating the adult versions of these flies.”

She explained that fruit flies and another type of common household pest lay their eggs in drains.

“If you want to work smarter, not harder, go to the source of this problem,” Kate said.

“Drain flies are just as common as fruit flies, and these guys begin their life cycle in the intimate setting that is the sludge-covered pipe in your sink. Simply boiling a pot of water and pouring it the drain knocks out their breeding ground.”

Fruit flies vs drain flies: What’s the difference?

Both are tiny, but drain flies have a fuzzier, darker appearance than the fruit fly, which is brown with red eyes.

While fruit flies buzz around your kitchen scraps, and your overripe fruit (where they get their name), drain flies like to breed in the drain or the bins.

Both are attracted to rotting organic material in one way or another, and both are unpleasant to have buzzing around your kitchen.

How to keep fruit flies and drain flies at bay

To keep fruit flies away it’s important to store your food properly. Do not leave ripe fruit and veg out on the counters.

To deal with drain flies keep pipes and drains clean.

To help keep both out of your house, keep windows closes where possible and repair cracks in your walls.

A number of experts chimed in on Kate’s post to agree with her insight.

One wrote: “As an exterminator the number of times I’ve had to tell people this.”

Another said: “I used to tell this to my pest control customers all the time. I even bought a cheap electric kettle so I could take care of the problem.

“As a plumber,” one wrote, “doing this regularly would have solved 90 percent of the drain issues I get called out to fix.”

Another vouched for the hack, and said: “I’ve tried this myself with drain flies and it’s pretty amazing just how fast they are gone.”

A professional cleaner detailed how to get rid of fruit flies with her “best hack”.

Cleaner Tonya claimed not to have had flies in her home for years after tackling the insects in this method.

She explained: “One way to help with fruit flies in your home is by washing your bananas as soon as you get them home from the store.”

The cleaning pro claimed that flies lay their eggs on bananas and when the eggs hatch fruit flies will invade your home.

Tonya said: “Fruit flies lay eggs on the banans then you bring them into your house and they hatch and you have fruit flies. So make sure you wash them as soon as you get home.”
