Former AFL WAG Amie Rohan has spoken about how she deals with her grief after losing her twin daughter Willow just five hours after giving birth to her.

Amie split from her childhood sweetheart and husband of four years, Geelong Cats star Gary Rohan, last year.

The pair share two daughters together, but lost their baby Willow in 2018 when Amie gave birth to twins.

Speaking to the Geelong Advertiser, Amie said that while ‘everyone heals differently,’ she’s found it easier to cope by talking to others about her heartache.

‘By me speaking it has opened up and created a space for other people to speak and share,’ she said.

Amie, who is the ex-wife of AFL star Gary Rohan, said she has also dealt with her pain by seeing a psychologist and focusing on things that ‘fill up her cup’.

She conceded that being a single mother and overcoming her grief at the same time has taken it’s toll, saying ‘it’s a lot’.

Amie said she’s keeping Willow’s memory alive at her home and often speaks about her to her daughters, Willow’s twin Bella, three, and Sadie, one.

But she said she ‘chokes up’ thinking about the day that Bella asks about what happened to her twin sister.

‘I wait for the day where Bella asks me, “mummy, what happened to my sister?” I get choked up every time I think about it but I know it won’t be a hard conversation because of all the work I have done behind the scenes,’ she explained.

Amie added that when she was pregnant with Sadie she struggled with the idea of loving another child, but now ‘can’t believe she ever thought that’.

She added that she has learned through helping others that there is ‘light at the end of the tunnel’.

Willow had suffered fatal neural tube defect after Amie gave birth and couldn’t be saved, but her sister Bella survived after spending three weeks in intensive care.

The Rohans welcomed their second daughter, Sadie Rose, in March last year, but called it quits just months after Sadie’s birth.

Last week, Amie revealed she has created an Instagram community to help other women who are ‘continuously processing’ the grief of child loss.

The account, called Willow Rays, has been named in honour of her late daughter Willow.

Amie shared a moving quote as she announced the news.

The quote read: ‘Grief does not change you.. it reveals you.’
